A woman's words in bloom

Like orchids...

Some thoughts bloom quietly, but leave a lasting fragrance.

Ganesha and the Restless Mouse | A Ganesha Story for Kids About Calming the Mind

The next morning, Madhava had a little storytelling session. So he had to stand in front of everyone and tell a short story about Lord Ganesha.

But as evening came, Madhav began to worry.

“What if I forget my story?”

“What if everyone laughs?”

“What if my friend tells a better story than me?”

He practised once. Then twice. Then he stopped.

His mind felt busy with too many thoughts.

Just then, a little mouse came running across the floor.

Madhav watched it dart from one corner to another.

“Grandma, look! That mouse cannot sit still!”

Grandma smiled. “Sometimes our mind is just like that little mouse. It keeps running from one thought to another.”

“Like mine?” Madhav asked.

“Yes,” Grandma said gently. “Fear, worry and comparison can make our mind restless. But we don't have to follow every thought.”

Madhav looked at the little mouse beside Ganesha's idol.

“Then what should I do?”

“Remember Ganesha,” Grandma said. “His mouse may be quick and restless, but it stays close to Him. You too can learn to guide your mind. Take a breath, say a prayer, and bring your attention back to what you are doing.”

Madhav closed his eyes and took a slow breath.

Then he practised his story once more.

This time, he did not think about whether someone else would be better. He simply told his story with a happy heart.

Before going to bed, Madhav folded his hands before Ganesha.

“Ganesha, please give me wisdom and courage.
Help me guide my restless mind.
Keep me away from fear and comparison,
and help me do my best with a peaceful heart.”

Madhav smiled.

The little mouse sat quietly near Ganesha.

And for the first time that evening, Madhav's mind became quiet too.

Moral: Our mind may become restless with fear, worry and comparison. With prayer and wisdom, we can gently guide it instead of letting it guide us.
